The Alarms Went Off. Literally.

Last week, I was in the shower—mid-rinse, minding my business—when every single smoke alarm in the house went off.

Unprovoked. Loud as hell. No smoke, no warning. Just pure chaos.

I almost brought the entire shower curtain down on myself, it scared me so bad!

I leaped out, soaking wet, slipping and sliding down the hallway like a greased-up penguin, skittering back and forth trying to figure out what the hell was going on.

The sound was unbearable. My ears started ringing.
I grabbed a kitchen towel and tried waving it under the alarms to “air them out.” That did absolutely nothing. So I grabbed the swivel chair from my boyfriend’s office—the tallest thing we own—and a long-handled dish brush from the sink (don’t ask), and got to work.

Picture this: me, soaking wet, barely holding my towel, on a spinning chair, blinds wide open, neighbors definitely watching, trying to stab a smoke detector into silence with a dish brush.

I was fighting for my life.

And just when I accepted that I might actually go out like that—bare-booty'd and baffled—it all… stopped.
Suddenly, every alarm went quiet. And there I was. Soggy. Spinning. Holding a brush like a sword and rethinking all my choices.

So what does this have to do with marketing?

Everything.

Because when you’re running a business without strategy, structure, or support, it feels just like that moment: chaotic, overstimulating, and impossible to fix while you’re in the middle of it. You end up throwing random tools at the problem, overexposed, underprepared, and hoping something sticks.

Here are 3 ways to keep your marketing from feeling like a full-body fire drill—and ground your business, even in chaos:

  1. Create your Emergency Message Bank.
Just like you keep a first aid kit in the house (or at least should), your business needs a go-to vault of messages that anchor your marketing.
Take 20 minutes today and write out:
    – The one-liner that explains what you do and who it’s for
    – The transformation you provide (and how it makes people feel)
    – A short story from a client win or moment of clarity
These 3 things can be repurposed into email intros, Reels, sales pages, and captions when you're feeling stretched, stuck, or sensory-overloaded.

  2. Identify your Marketing “Baseline.”
When you’re well-rested and in flow, you might be able to create, pitch, post, and engage with ease. But what about when life is life-ing?
Define your bare minimum marketing baseline—something like:
    – 1 connection-building post per week
    – 1 email every other week
    – 10 minutes engaging with your existing audience
That’s not you falling off. That’s you protecting your energy while keeping momentum.

  3. Run everything through your nervous system.
If your marketing plan feels smart but it makes your chest tighten or your gut drop—it’s not sustainable. Ask yourself:
    – Does this feel aligned or like pressure?
    – Am I creating from clarity or comparison?
    – Is this plan built for my energy and audience, or someone else’s?

The best marketing strategy doesn’t just sound smart—it fits like a second skin.
